Ontario reports fewer than 100 new cases of

COVID-19 for first time in 4 months....

Ontario reported just 76 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, the lowest day-over-day increase since March 22.

It’s also the first time the number of new cases is below 100 since March 24, when 85 coronavirus cases were reported.

The news comes on the same day the province confirmed Toronto and Peel Region will be moving into Stage 3 later this week.

Windsor-Essex, which is remaining in Stage 2, reported 22 new cases, Toronto had 13 new cases, while York and Peel regions reported 9 and 4 new cases, respectively.

Dr. Wajid Ahmed, the associate medical officer of health for Windsor-Essex, said there had been a rise in cases in the city of Windsor in addition to the ongoing outbreaks on farms.

The province wants to collect and examine data for at least another week before deciding whether the region can move ahead in the reopening process, Ahmed said, adding numbers for the region must fall closer to the provincial average.

He stressed the need to continue with physical distancing and other health measures, suggesting some may feel even in Stage 2 that everything is back to normal.

“With more reopening … the likelihood of people coming in close contact with each other increases,” Ahmed said in a news conference Wednesday morning.

The province said it will continue to monitor the situation in Windsor-Essex and provide assistance through measures such as on-farm testing.

Once again, the number of new cases involving people 39 years of age an under continues to outpace cases among people aged 40 and older.

The total number of coronavirus cases in the province stands at 38,986 with just over 89 per cent of those infected having recovered to date.
